It also has the most polished apps, one of the best streaming track records, and a proprietary protocol (Lightway) that is both fast and open source. The question is whether the premium price tag is justified, or whether NordVPN and Surfshark offer better value. We tested it to find out.

Speed Performance

ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol put up strong numbers in our February 2026 tests. We recorded 87.5 Mbps downloads on US servers (our 100 Mbps baseline), placing it just behind NordVPN's NordLynx. UK and German servers returned 80-83 Mbps, and even the distant Tokyo and Sydney servers managed 66-70 Mbps.

Lightway has a notable advantage in connection time. It establishes VPN connections almost instantly - typically under a second - compared to 2-3 seconds for WireGuard implementations and 8-15 seconds for OpenVPN. For users who frequently switch between connected and disconnected states, this makes a noticeable difference.

ExpressVPN also supports post-quantum encryption, making it one of only two VPNs in our review set (alongside Mullvad) with this forward-looking protection.

Streaming and Unblocking

Streaming is where ExpressVPN truly earns its premium. It unblocked every single streaming platform we tested: Netflix (US, UK, Japan), Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Paramount+, Peacock, DAZN, and Crunchyroll. That is a perfect 12 out of 12.

ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer feature (Smart DNS) also enables streaming unblocking on devices that cannot run VPN apps natively, like older smart TVs and gaming consoles. This is a genuine advantage for households with diverse device setups.

The reliability here is the key differentiator. Many VPNs can unblock Netflix US today but fail next week. ExpressVPN has maintained consistent streaming access across our monthly tests for over a year.

Privacy and Security

ExpressVPN's security credentials are solid. All servers run on its proprietary TrustedServer technology (RAM-only), meaning no data persists after a reboot. The Lightway protocol is open source and has been independently audited by Cure53. The broader no-logs policy has been verified by KPMG (most recently September 2024).

The privacy picture is complicated by ownership. ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies in 2021 for $936 million. Kape's history matters: the company previously operated as Crossrider, which was associated with adware distribution. Kape now owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, PIA, and ZenMate - four of the world's largest VPN brands under one roof. While each brand publishes independent audit results, the concentration of ownership is worth noting.

There was also the Daniel Gericke incident in 2021, where ExpressVPN's then-CIO was identified as having helped the UAE build surveillance tools. ExpressVPN stated they knew about his background and that he had no access to user data or backend systems. He has since left the company.

On the positive side, ExpressVPN's BVI jurisdiction is privacy-friendly, and the Lightway protocol being open source provides genuine code transparency that few competitors match.

Features

ExpressVPN's feature set is more restrained than NordVPN or Surfshark. You get the essentials - kill switch, split tunneling, auto-connect - executed flawlessly. But there is no ad blocker, no multi-hop, no dedicated IP option, and no port forwarding.

The 8 simultaneous connections limit is lower than NordVPN's 10 and Surfshark's unlimited. For most individuals this is fine. For larger households, it could be a constraint.

Where ExpressVPN excels is platform breadth. Native apps for every major platform, a custom router firmware (Aircove), and browser extensions that actually control the full VPN tunnel (not just a proxy) make it the most versatile choice for device compatibility.
