NordVPN Review 2026

NordVPN has held its position as one of the most popular VPNs in the world for years. But popularity alone does not earn our recommendation. We purchased a NordVPN subscription with our own money, tested it across five countries, and scored it against our nine evaluation categories. Here is what we found.

Speed Performance

NordVPN was the fastest VPN in our February 2026 tests. Using NordLynx (Nord's custom WireGuard implementation), we retained 89% of our baseline speed on US servers, which is exceptional. Even connecting to Tokyo from our New York test location, we still saw 71 Mbps downloads on a 100 Mbps connection.

The story is consistent across all test locations. UK and German servers hovered around 82-85 Mbps download speeds. Australia, the most distant server from our test location, still managed nearly 69 Mbps. For everyday browsing, streaming in 4K, and even competitive gaming on nearby servers, NordVPN's speeds are more than sufficient.

One important note: NordLynx is the protocol that delivers these results. If you switch to OpenVPN, expect speeds roughly 20-30% slower. NordLynx is enabled by default, so most users will get these speeds out of the box.

Streaming and Unblocking

NordVPN is one of only two VPNs we tested (alongside ExpressVPN) that reliably unblocked every major streaming service in our tests. Netflix US, UK, and Japan all worked without issue. Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Max all loaded on the first attempt.

This matters because streaming services are in a constant arms race against VPN providers, and many VPNs that worked six months ago no longer do. NordVPN's SmartPlay technology (their DNS-based unblocking system) appears to be keeping pace with platform detection updates.

For users whose primary VPN use case is accessing geo-restricted content, NordVPN and ExpressVPN are the clear top choices. NordVPN edges ahead on value since it costs significantly less on a 2-year plan.

Privacy and Security

NordVPN's security setup is among the strongest we have reviewed. The fundamentals are solid: AES-256-GCM encryption, a reliable kill switch on all platforms, and DNS leak protection enabled by default. Beyond the basics, NordVPN offers Threat Protection (a system-level ad and malware blocker), Double VPN for routing traffic through two servers, and Onion over VPN for Tor access without a separate browser.

The privacy picture is strong but not without caveats. NordVPN's no-logs policy has been independently audited three times by Deloitte (most recently in December 2024), and each audit confirmed that NordVPN does not store connection timestamps, bandwidth usage, IP addresses, or browsing data. All servers run on RAM only, meaning data is wiped on every reboot.

The caveat: NordVPN's apps are not open source. This means the broader security community cannot independently verify the client-side code. For most users this is an acceptable trade-off given the audit history, but privacy purists may prefer Mullvad or Proton VPN, both of which publish their full source code.

NordVPN is incorporated in Panama, which has no mandatory data retention laws and is outside the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. The parent company, Nord Security, also owns Surfshark - a fact they have publicly disclosed.

Features

NordVPN's feature set is comprehensive. Ten simultaneous connections cover most households. Split tunneling lets you route specific apps outside the VPN. The Meshnet feature enables direct device-to-device connections, which is useful for remote access and LAN gaming. Dedicated IP addresses are available as a paid add-on.

The one significant feature gap is port forwarding, which NordVPN does not support. If you need port forwarding for torrenting or self-hosting, PIA or Proton VPN are better choices.

NordVPN's pricing is competitive on initial sign-up but increases at renewal:

If your top priority is absolute privacy transparency, consider Mullvad or Proton VPN - both offer open-source apps and Mullvad does not even require an email to sign up. If you need port forwarding, choose PIA or Proton VPN. If you want unlimited device connections, Surfshark is a better pick.
