NordVPN's prices have dropped closer to Surfshark's, and the merger between the two companies under Nord Security raises questions about independence. Speed Performance

Surfshark delivered solid speeds in our February 2026 tests, though it trails NordVPN and ExpressVPN in every location. US servers returned 85.1 Mbps on our 100 Mbps baseline, UK at 80.3 Mbps, and Germany at 78.6 Mbps. Long-distance connections to Tokyo (67.4 Mbps) and Sydney (64.8 Mbps) were reasonable.

These speeds are absolutely sufficient for streaming in 4K, video calls, large downloads, and general browsing. You will not notice the difference from NordVPN in everyday use. The gap becomes more apparent in sustained high-bandwidth activities like large file transfers, where NordVPN's NordLynx consistently moves data 4-5% faster.

Surfshark uses standard WireGuard rather than a custom implementation, which means performance improvements will come from the WireGuard project itself rather than proprietary optimization.

Streaming and Unblocking

Surfshark unblocked 9 out of 12 streaming platforms in our tests - a strong showing that falls just short of NordVPN and ExpressVPN's perfect scores. Netflix US and UK worked reliably, as did Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Peacock, and Crunchyroll.

The gaps: Netflix Japan was inconsistent, failing on most servers during our test window. DAZN was blocked entirely. Paramount+ worked on some servers but required trying multiple options.

For most users, these gaps will not matter. If you primarily want US and UK streaming content, Surfshark handles it well. If you specifically need Japanese Netflix or DAZN access, NordVPN or ExpressVPN are more reliable choices.

Surfshark's static IP servers tend to be more reliable for streaming than the regular rotation. If you find a server that works, favoriting it in the app is a smart move.

Privacy and Security

Surfshark's security fundamentals are solid: AES-256-GCM encryption, WireGuard protocol, a functional kill switch on all platforms, and RAM-only servers. Beyond that, you get split tunneling (Bypasser), CleanWeb ad blocking, MultiHop for double encryption, rotating IP addresses, dedicated IP (as a paid add-on), GPS spoofing on Android, and NoBorders mode for use in restrictive countries.

What is missing: no port forwarding (a gap for torrenters and self-hosters) and no Tor-over-VPN integration.
